I use ad-aware and spybot search %26 destroy for anti-spyware software and then Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 12 for anti-virus %26 firewall and so far i've had my laptop for 4 months and it's been running great. You can download spybot at www.download.com before using Trend Micro PC-Cillin i was using Norton Anti-Virus and that worked great too... i bought that at www.ebay.com with a trusted seller with great reviews.

You really need to check with AT%26T, to see what their EULA reads. Usually you are only allowed to put a software program on one PC, unless states otherwise.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. A new virus cannot be dectected unless anti virus companies can find about it. And by the time they are detected the virus has already destroyed millions of computers. itunes is virus free. Limewire has tones of viruses and trojans in it. You can add buy a hardware to block hackers. I use limewire. If you have a old pc use it for limewire.

Symantec/Norton is a memory hog and really slows down a computer. The EZAntivirus and PestPatrol by Computer Associates that is provided by Yahoo is the same basic product used by many Fortune 500 companies. I used to buy CA protection before I was able to switch ISPs and get it for free. In my opinion it's as good as anything else out there.

One final thought..... I doubt that Yahoo would take a chance and provide a crappy product and risk all kinds of negative publicity if people began getting infected with viruses or spyware. It would NOT do their public image much good.

My Norton was doing exactly the same...so I got rid of it, installed AVG (it's free) which promptly found 16 viruses and trojans.

when the live update box disapears it dosnt mean that the updateing process has finnished.

sometimes it dosnt come up because norton is doing a automatic live update, and the updater is running in the background without you knowing.

I don't know what rogers on-line protection is but I would ditch Norton, which is a performance hog and tends to slow down your computer, for something like AVG Free. It's only about 1 percent less reliable in catching viruses, it's free, and it doesn't slow your computer down noticeably.

If you go to security settings, from start button, control panel, then click on security. I think you might be able to change your settings from there. But not sure why they should have changed them selves, these things happen I suppose.

It could be that some malware is compramising your security. Reboot your computer with the CD in, press F8 and start from disk. This will mean your computer will be scanned before anything nasty can prevent it.

Yes, Norton Internet Security is best. But still sometimes some viruses or trojans can get around it (it happened to me). Then you might have to use system restore on the computer (or sometimes from a disc). If you don't have a system restore disc, call the place where you bought the computer and ask them for the 800 computer manufacturer support number where you can buy one. I got one for windows XP from support in India for $11 and it came fast. You should always have a disc, because one trojan attacks the system in a way that makes you turn off system restore to fix it, then you can't use go back anymore...so you have to have a disc.

SBC does not sell a home computer security system where you install it yourself. I didn't think so when I read your question, (SBC was my first ISP) so I went to their website, which happens to have merged into AT%26T now, and there is nothing on that site selling a security software package.

Now, I do know that SBC had a browser type of security, which was used in the web based email program they provided customers. However, it was not something which came on a disk as a stand alone product.

As such, you don't uninstall this type of security, as it isn't even on your computer, but is rather on the AT%26T Servers.

Just as the Yahoo! free and Plus email services uses Norton for its browser mail program security. When you download email the Server installed security first scans it. When you click to download an attachment, then Norton scans the download first, then tells you if it is infected or not, and if it isn't, you are next presented with a download window, which then turns into an Open/Save window, where you can either view it without saving it, or you can download it to your hard drive and then view it whenever you please.

Don't worry about these types of security as they are not on your hard drive. I think the disk you have is your modem software install disk. When you hooked up your modem you ran the install disk right?

Feel free to install other local security software on your system. As what you refer to is Server based, what you install doesn't run the risk of incompatibility so you won't have system instability, lack of proper protection, or crashes, as yo would if you left another Vendor's product on your system and install a different Vendor's solution.

The 1st answer, garbage. The 2nd, well, that applies to running applications, not protecting the contents from getting infected with a virus. It is the operating system which runs the application AFTER the drive is loaded and recognized, so even if a program runs immediately from the jump drive, it is still too late as the operating system and/or virus gets at the drive contents before the application starts. The virus protection comes from the operating system, not the hardware (except in the case of cmos/bios) in most cases. A flash drive hooked to a USB port is just another piece of hardware which requires some sort of driver installed in the operating system to deal with it as a logical device, a disk drive. There is one way which might work for you. SD memory cards have a physical write protect switch. I have a USB adapter which uses SD memory cards and I tried it just now, flipped the switch and sure enough, no writes allowed. Otherwise my little USB/SD memory card adapter works just like any other jump or flash drive hooked to a USB port. The ways to protect your data is to write protect the jump drive like a SD memory card does, rely on the computer owner having an uninfected machine running adequate virus protection, or lastly, take your chances.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

Yes, Microsoft Windows is shoddy like that. You try to uninstall and it leaves messy files, directories and junk in the registry. You'll need to manually delete everything that is left behind.
switch to the administrator account then try again some programs require you to be on that account

You can also try to scan in safe mode (tap F8 when booting on) with Ad Aware and Spybot.
If whatever you are talking about has re-activated itself consider it may be some kind of spyware or virus. Do NOT touch the registry unless you know what you are doing. This is an easy way to destroy your system. Run anti-spyware and anti-virus scans before you do anything else.

Our company recently had someone from overseas China connect their laptop to our network system. Ever since then, our internet has been running really slow, one of our database servers completely crashed, and a lot of other misc. computer problems. We have deduced that the China laptop may have infected our network system with some kind of chinese virus which cannot be scanned or fixed by the american anti-virus protection we currently run.

Try a online antivirus scanner and a online anti-adware/malware/spyware scanner in safe mode with network to clean up your computer BEFORE you download anything.

Turn off system restore before you boot up in safe mode with network to clear your system restore points for viruses, spyware, adware etc.

To get in safe mode tap F8 when booting you computer.

Choose "Safe mode with network".

To speed up your computer - click onto Tools on your Toolbar; then Internet Options; then on the General tab look for Browsing History; click onto Delete; then click onto Delete Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History.

That along with the AVG anti virus (which you should download immediately and do a thorough PC scan), and Zone Alarm firewall others mentioned should get your computer back in tiptop shape, running like a champ. An AT%26T Tech told me it was because of my McAfee Antivirus being activated on my Windows Vista and Vista has a lot of security. So he told me to go to msconfig and uncheck everything in the startup and running that says McAfee. I did and now my internet runs but I am scared to use it because I dont have the antivirus protection right? What do I do? Do I go back and check everything or just some of them? Which ones if so?

i had the same anti virus for my xps as well. the thing is that, mcafee is not a good anti virus. not anymore. what i did is... uninstalled it and installed kaspersky.

mcafee eats up most of your computer's resources too especially on startup. making it slow. just a suggestion, don't use norton and mcafee. try trend or kaspersky.

Yes, you are correct you need security. I suggest you download Windows Defender %26 let it run alongside. It's a temporary solution though !!

Or else, download Avast Home Edition and uninstall McAfee, in spite of being a free for download it has security and a firewall that McAfee %26 Norton can only dream of..

This is a sincere suggestion ..
Now that you are connected, go back and recheck all McAfee entries..see if you stay connected. If the problem returns, instead of unchecking everything..try going into the McAfee program itself and just disable the firewall. Vista has one built in that works just fine...don't need two.

And remember, viruses are simply computer programs. If you don't download anything, including email attachments, to your computer, you won't have any problem with them.
