I can't figure our my virus protection program for my computer. PLEASE HELP!!!?

I installed Norton 360 antivirus protection and it was working fine the last few days, but now when I turn my computer on it says in red "BROWSING NOT SAFE: AUTO PROTECT OFF. So I go in to the Norton icon on my computer and it say that Auto protect is turned off (I don't know why I never turned it off) So I press the button "FIX" next to it but nothing happenes. PLEASE HELP!! I don't know waht to do...I'm not very smart when it comes to computers???

I would normally suggest reinstalling the whole application. Some where along the way your program has a bug that Symantec will be best able to address. I believe the easiest and most appropriate thing would to be to call tech support. You paid for it.

I have had the same type of problem with Norton Antivirus 2007. It is usually cased by a driver or service that does not load or stops working. You can check your event log for errors.

If you purchased 360 you have phone support. I would try to reinstall the product, if that does not work, I would call Symantec.

I've also had this happen to me.

I "took a chance" and un-installed Norton and then re-installed it (provided that you have the installation disk available). After I was done the system was okay again. Every now and then Norton will "corrupt" itself.

When you do this (un-install) and (re-install), Norton will be completely in RED and alert you that EVERYTHING is not up to date. You will have to run a full scan as well as a live-update again.

If you are running window XP you do have a virus protection built in but you have to have it turned on in control panel go to setting then click on security and you will see your settings in there. Now if you are looking for a good anti-virus program I suggest AVG free. You go to avg.com and download the free software. Now don't buy it. I say if it is free then I will take it so you do have to be patient because you will have to keep clicking free like forever. Just Kidding but it does take a bit of work to get the download you are looking for then you can scan your system for problems and fix them for FREE what a great word huh? Get f-secure firewall and anti-virus. You can get a free trial for 3 weeks. The firewall will tell you about any program connecting to the internet that isn't usual. Like I stop it connecting media player on my desktop. I use the Windows firewall on my laptop - that stops some things coming in but not connections out. So MSN know all my playlists and what music I listen to. So a firewall will protect you against malware, viruses, worms, trojans, etc. the anti virus will scan all emails and everything else coming in for viruses and malware. You can schedule it to scan once a week and do a full system scan at a time when you aren't using the computer or even if you are using it! It does it better if you aren't using it. I also do an occasional scan with Ccleaner - that removes cookies, temporary files and other crap. F-secure also do an online scan - when a virus stopped my anti-virus program working - the online scan found it and deleted it. The program isn't the cheapest - it comes from Finland. If you happen to bank with Barclays give them a ring. I got a discount on the firewall and antivirus for my desktop and a licence for the antivirus for my laptop free for 2 years. I think that offer is still on for people who do online banking.

You could try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:

start

accessories

systems tools

system restore

This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.

If that doesnt work it might be best to save all your personal files and do a destructive restore back to factory settings. Not much fun I know. I highly recommend Norton Antivirus 2007. Good Luck

No, they shouldn't directly HARM your system but they are likely slow it down if used together....

Having more programs scanning files before you get to use them... some programs keep files on hold and you don't want scans to take so long that a program stops responding....

Also I recommend AGAINST Norton Antivirus/Internet Security Suite, especially older versions around 2000-2003 vintage... it's too complex for its own good, and not only slows your system down but tends to eventually make windows fall over...

All that being said, I'm running Windows XP here and do have 2 virus scanners installed in tandem (I believe even that's probably overkill) both are free... Avast! and AVG free... (Avast also does some spyware scanning but stuff like Adaware seems to do better)

you can have it from internet, download its exe that is from grisoft and you can also put it on update automatically while installing it so that you dont need to update it again and again and even keep your eye on validity date thats its expiry.
AVG is not the "do all" anti-malware program but it is a very good and free anti-virus solution.

You should only run one anti-virus program at a time no matter how manny you have!

As for other malware such as adware, spyware, keyloggers and the rest, get at least two programs to search and delete them. I use Adaware SE and Spybot S%26D. Both are free for personal use.

I recently got internet (finally) and I am looking for the best firewall and antivirus/anti-spy protection, preferably a free download if it's good. Here's some I looked at on PC World: avast, avg, a-squared, ad-aware, jetico. I also already had windows defender, yahoo anti-spy, and live onecare safety scanner. Are any of these any good? Also when I bought the laptop years ago it came with mcafee and norton but they are the old (2002) versions. would they be worth keeping? I have heard that Norton slows pcs down, which i don't want, and that you should only have one antivirus program running. is this true and if so, why? I don't do much more online than surf for fun, email, and once in awhile order stuff, so it isn't exactly high profile but I want to be safe. Any help would be appreciated!

Dump the Norton and the McAfee, they will be useless as they are way out of date. I would definitely uninstall both.

I am guessing that a computer that old has very little RAM. You probably would want to use a "light" firewall.

There isn't any need to switch to Kaspersky anti-virus as Avast! Home edition is good enough. Just make sure to keep Avast!, Windows Defender and Comodo active and updated all the time. You can also use the free McAfee Site Advisor plug-in for your browser (IE and Firefox), it will warn you of bad sites:

I was just wondering how to protect my PC from nasty lil virsues while I download?? I already have Norton antivirus n firewall protection.... however I play around with digital images and tagged signatures which requires alot of downloading large zip files.. due to my own lack of experience I didnt back up my system and 2 months ago I was infected with a nasty troajn virus that norton could not get rid of for less then 200 bucks.. needless to say I didnt have that to spend so I was forced to reformat the whole thing, losing a ton of personal stuff.. please help.. Alright, I just download a LiveUpdate thing, and when I restarted my computer, it said 'my free trial period has ended'. I tried activating the program with the program key that I found on my computer, but it doesn't work.

Try to use Spybot S%26D(free antispyware), and AVG or NOD32 antivirus. I'm using NOD32 and Spybot for few years and never had any damage on my comp.
It cannot accept the product key because the software's free trial period has ended, and you cannot update until you renew your subscription with Norton.
There is a difference between a Product/Program Key (and other aliases) which you might find on the 'About' page of a program, and an activation key. As a rule, activation keys do not remain stored.

System Mechanic 7 is garbage and has messed your your pc, trying to play mechanic.

You have the disk, suggest that you remove the program.

Go to your start, open, accessories, open system tools and open system restore. See if there is a date that you can restore your pc back to your last good configuration.

Do I need Norton Protection Ctr. and Yahoo Online Protection?

On my bottom taskbar I have both the Norton Protection Center icon (circle) and the AT%26T Yahoo! Online Protection icon (triangle). It appears they are both loaded and running on my computer. The Norton software seems to be running fine (all security boxes are checked) but Yahoo Protection shows an AntiVirus and AntiSpyware scan are needed and this "scan needed" alert does not change when I run the Norton Protection Center scan. If I hit the "Scan Now" button in Yahoo Protection, I get a hourglass symbel for a few seconds and then nothing else happens. Are these two protection programs fighting each other or working together?

OK when you downloaded Yahoo Online Protection it came with the Norton Protection. Actually the Norton is the Yahoo Online protection. The Yahoo icon actually does nothing except tell you whether or not Norton is on.

They are one and the same thing. I did disable the silver att shield on my task bar at one time. If you are scanning with Norton you are good. Sometimes the Att part doesn't recognize that Norton did the scan right away for them. Use the Norton part of it. It might refresh after restarting your computer. I have had the same problem before with Att not recognizing the scan was done. But it is not a problem.

EDIT You did run the full system scan? There is also the quick scan. The full system scan might be needed to turn the alert off.

The actual IP address in question would help, although in most cases, incoming traffic like that is often routine. It would help to know whether it's from your home network, your ISP, or outside of your ISP.

Run in safe mode and run 'Hijack this' and 'adaware' to remove any obvious viruses.

Go into msconfig and remove anything that is starting up automatically at boot time.

Restart you computer in safe mode and try to uninstall that way. To enter safe mode, press f8 while the computer is booting. You'll be given a few options one of which is safe mode. After entering safe mode, go into add/remove programs and uninstall CA.

You may want to use another AV Software package. The one I really like and have used for a couple of years (and is absolutely free) is avast!. It's very fast and unintrusive.

OK, this is a situation which just burns my bacon! I am so sick of security software enticing users to download and install their stuff, and not explaining how difficult it is to get rid of it. Its probably just as good as any! Keep this minor detail in mind tho, anti virus software tends to make people believe they are immune to viruses. This is so far from the truth it aint funny! No. You'll need ONE decent AV (AVG not bad, but not the best). You also need ONE decent anti-malware/anti-spyware application - AVG does have a VERY good one of those, or Ad-Aware as a decent second (that one has a free version). I'm pretty sure that Yahoo uses McAfee, I don't know of any AV software being developed by Yahoo. At any rate, I found both McAfee and Norton lacking. As for a free product, probably the best one out there is AVG Free, when used in combination with a good firewall such as Zone Alarm, it's pretty good.

For the ultimate in protection, I'd go for Panda Platinum (or I think now it's called Panda Internet Security). It's about 70 or 80 bucks a year for up to 3 computers, gives you not only AV protection but also protection against Spyware, Tracking Cookies, dialers, spam, everything. The feature that I like best about it though, is the Parental Filter, so I can keep all the scum away from my kids. You can get a free 30 day trial from Panda.

Oh and stay away from that Microsoft Garbage, I tried it and it allowed SEVERAL popup generators to be installed on my system. Of course, I didn't realize it because it was stopping the pop-ups from showing up, but one day I was trying to run a game on my system and it was going so S%26gt;L%26gt;O%26gt;W%26gt;%26gt; that I took a look at the process monitor, when I realized I had about 10 pop-up generators running in the background eating up my CPU cycles.

I would uninstall your AVG anti-virus and NOT disable the ZoneAlarm virus protection. AVG has never been very good at detecting viruses.

Norton Antivirus 2006 is the slowest of all the Norton products. Get rid of it as it uses too much memory, and slows down ur comp. If u r opting for a change, then u can try the new norton antivirus 2007, which is relatively faster and uses lesser memory than NAV 2006. Otherwise u can free ur comp, by getting rid of several startup processes and freeing up ur memory, so that NAV 2006 can run smoothly, but still i wouldnt keep NAV 2006. i want to install a new anti virus but everytime i go the the Add/REmove programs place, then i go to Yahoo! Personally, I don't think any antivirus or antispyware is 100% effective simply because new viruses and spyware are being developed by the minute. When I try to open a program, even the Symantec AntiVirus which I have, I get the error message that 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the approppriate permission to access the item.'

Then a Symantec AntiVirus Notification comes:-

Ok, not a problem. Just calm down and i'll tell you how to remove this trojan. Everything will be ok.

Here's what you need to do.

1st, don't waste your time with AVG, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, superantispyware, mcafee, avast, panda, kaspersky, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.
