When trying to install it will say you must un-install the ??? antivirus before you can continue installing this one. NO! They will see each other as a virus, and probably shut down your computer. And the same for firewalls. They will try to get rid of each other. You won't increase your computer's protection, you will kill it.

Restart you computer in safe mode and try to uninstall that way. To enter safe mode, press f8 while the computer is booting. You'll be given a few options one of which is safe mode. After entering safe mode, go into add/remove programs and uninstall CA.

You may want to use another AV Software package. The one I really like and have used for a couple of years (and is absolutely free) is avast!. It's very fast and unintrusive.

OK, this is a situation which just burns my bacon! I am so sick of security software enticing users to download and install their stuff, and not explaining how difficult it is to get rid of it. This just happened to me also. Every few days Norton pops up to do a scan and tells me I have 1 problem but doesn't tell me or give me access to find out what it is. I think you should try Kaspersky Antivirus for Antivirus and if you want the firewall with it then buy Kaspersky Internet Security. I can suggest you Zone Alarm Pro as an external Firewall. Its probably just as good as any! Keep this minor detail in mind tho, anti virus software tends to make people believe they are immune to viruses. This is so far from the truth it aint funny! There is not one piece of virus protection software on the market that will catch it all! New viruses are coming out on almost a daily basis! No. You'll need ONE decent AV (AVG not bad, but not the best). You also need ONE decent anti-malware/anti-spyware application - AVG does have a VERY good one of those, or Ad-Aware as a decent second (that one has a free version). Combined with a decent pop-up blocker (both IE7 and Firefox have one built in which is always the best option), and that is all you need. Oh - and a firewall, but Windows XP with SP2 has a decent firewall anyway - just make sure it is enabled.

I'm pretty sure that Yahoo uses McAfee, I don't know of any AV software being developed by Yahoo. At any rate, I found both McAfee and Norton lacking. As for a free product, probably the best one out there is AVG Free, when used in combination with a good firewall such as Zone Alarm, it's pretty good.

For the ultimate in protection, I'd go for Panda Platinum (or I think now it's called Panda Internet Security). It's about 70 or 80 bucks a year for up to 3 computers, gives you not only AV protection but also protection against Spyware, Tracking Cookies, dialers, spam, everything. The feature that I like best about it though, is the Parental Filter, so I can keep all the scum away from my kids. You can get a free 30 day trial from Panda.

Oh and stay away from that Microsoft Garbage, I tried it and it allowed SEVERAL popup generators to be installed on my system. Of course, I didn't realize it because it was stopping the pop-ups from showing up, but one day I was trying to run a game on my system and it was going so S%26gt;L%26gt;O%26gt;W%26gt;%26gt; that I took a look at the process monitor, when I realized I had about 10 pop-up generators running in the background eating up my CPU cycles.

I would uninstall your AVG anti-virus and NOT disable the ZoneAlarm virus protection. AVG has never been very good at detecting viruses.

Norton Antivirus 2006 is the slowest of all the Norton products. Get rid of it as it uses too much memory, and slows down ur comp. If u r opting for a change, then u can try the new norton antivirus 2007, which is relatively faster and uses lesser memory than NAV 2006. Otherwise u can free ur comp, by getting rid of several startup processes and freeing up ur memory, so that NAV 2006 can run smoothly, but still i wouldnt keep NAV 2006. It is best to get rid of it completely. I would recommend the free AVG antivirus 7.5

i want to install a new anti virus but everytime i go the the Add/REmove programs place, then i go to Yahoo! Applications and i click "Change/Ramove" but nothing happens...isnt a program supposed to open?? if it is supposed then it dosnt and everytime i turn off my computer and all the programs are shuting down, a window pops up saying "SBC Yahoo! Personally, I don't think any antivirus or antispyware is 100% effective simply because new viruses and spyware are being developed by the minute. what I would do is go to google and search for AVG Free and Spybot Search and destroy ( make sure you get spybot and not spywarebot%26lt;-----its a virus). I personally use the programs and they work great. Best of all THEY ARE FREE :)

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

You might want to consider Avast for anti-virus protection. Totally free and seems a step ahead of AVG. BitDefender free version is quite good at what it does, which is scan for and remove viruses. I have no idea how the active protection works though, as you must pay for it!

Here's the deal. I have Norton Systemworks Basic 2006 on my system. I also later purchased Norton Internet Security. When updating my Systemworks to Antivirus 2007, loading it required that I uninstall Internet Security. After loading Antivirus 2007 I tried re-installing Internet Security. Got the same message; to load, need to uninstall other product. Trying to get help from Norton seems impossible.

Three questions:

1. Can anyone verify that having Norton Internet Security is a waste--in terms of adding protection--if you already have Norton Antivirus?

2. If not, anyone have a means to get around this catch 22 of needing to uninstall one security product to load the other?

3. Anyone know how to hold Norton accountable for a simple question?

I use BitDefender myself. It is probably the best antivirus around, certainly better than Norton, which I used for years before finding BitDefender. I have been using BitDefender since I built my current computer, which was probably oh... close to a year ago. The only time it uses any noticeable amount of resources is when it scans, and I have mine set to scan in the middle of the night.
Well McAfee slows my computer down to crawl, and Bit defender is more protection... i think, but you may have up grade to versions 10, and AVG is more difficult for new users

Try and uninstall the program, then, (this is risky) go into xp security and turn off your firewall, download the software again...open and install, turn back on your firewall then restart your computer....you may have to do this with defender as well, I figured that out the hard way..don't forget to turn your firewall back on after you install the programs...

It makes no difference if you are on dial-up or broadband as to your security software. You don't have to download the program, you can purchase them from a store like best buy or amazon.. which is better anyways because then you have the actual disk incase you need to reinstall or incase you want to run the command line scanner.

If you are going to go with freeware you will not be protected.. that's the bottom line.

Freeware doesn't provide real-time protection nor do they provide timely updates (if at all) .. both of which are vital. By the time you run a manual scan you are infected... so you may as well not even bother installing the freeware.

McAfee takes no more time to load than anything else if it is properly configured. You do not have to install ALL of the add-on features. You can even turn off the splash screen.

If your computer is so incredibly slow that it's taking a long time to load then you should look at the CPU speed and amount of RAM you have and see if you can upgrade.

you probably already have a Virus in there, I've had viruses invade my computer and shut down my McAfee so the best solution would be to reload your whole operating system. I have iolo system mechanic and mcafee security center installed on my computer and i uninstalled norton antivirus long ago and on system mechanic it says "Norton Internet Worm Protection is installed, but may not be active or running"

I'm not familiar with the inner workings of iolo or McAfee security center, but I can provide you with a couple of pointers.

I'm not sure whether iolo will support monitoring for security products other than its own. The most important thing is to make sure that Mcafee security center tells you that your system is protected. Always make sure that you never run more than on one anti-virus or firewall, because they will clash.

I know AOL provides McAfee VirusScan Plus for free, but that does not mean it will check your PC for Mcafee security center.

Your registry may be damaged and neither iolo nor AOL can find traces of the programs in your Windows registry, so this does not mean that the programs are not installed on your system.

There is no complete protection from one Antivirus program. But the best in my opinion are Kaspersky and Eset Nod32. I use Eset, and it is really light on the system (doesn't slow down your computer), and it also protects you very well. Kaspersky is very good at detecting viruses, slows your pc up a bit, though not significantly. I've used Kaspersky before Nod32 to get rid of a virus a caught last year.

I just got my friend onto the internet but she appears to have a virus on her computer (it may be something else but if it is a virus it's a good one!) Sooo, I went on to my computer and downloaded the file to load AVG on to her computer, transferred it with a chip reader and tried to open the file, absolutely nothing happens whichever way I try (run, open from explorer, add/remove programs)

What I really need to know, is it a virus? if so how do I get rid of it, I have only tried loading AVG so maybe it is specific to that program are there any other good free antivirus software (or even a trial version but one that removes viruss and doesn't just search for them)

You should only use one antivirus and one firewall at a time. So if you have 2 installed, you will need to remove one of them.

It could be a virus of somekind, but it could also be BT... I recently had to leave BT Broadband because of their appauling traffic managment. It became extremely slow, especially during peak times.

The 2 scanning engines will fight each other to scan every file that you read, write or execute which can cause a major computer slowdown. For the same reason, using 2 A-Vs can cause you to have less protection from the various malware, not more.

You have to buy it every year. If you want it free go with AVG AV version 7.5. I have had it for 3 years and it does a great job.
Your antiviral protection will expire after a year or two and you'll have to renew it. OR if you want to "cheat", you can completely reboot your computer and that will essentially "reset" the antiviral program and give you another year for free!!
No, you are not protected for life. You can use the antivirus program itself forever, BUT normal subscription length for downloading virus updates is usually one year. So since there are new viruses coming out every day, not being able to update your virus definitions really makes your software worthless after the year is up, so you will need to renew. Also, my advice is to stay away from both Norton and McAfee. Norton - don't even get me started. Slows your computer down to a crawl. Especially the all in one software packages like Systemworks. Yes you have to keep paying yearly to keep up the subscription. There are always new viruses coming out, and they are always upgrading the definitions.

I've used Symantec and Norton, but I want an Antivirus program that doesn't slow down my computer that much and that it can detect all of the viruses on my computer because I know that Norton and Symantec miss a lot.

It would help to know what antivirus program you are running. Windows XP SP2 does not interfere with AV programs. You should check in your Programs to see what it is, and probably remove that portion of it if you can.

See the problem is that... there is no Best AntiVirus. They all have pros and cons. Some are good, most free programs are crap (imho, and in my personal experience) and none are the best.

I have the newest version of Norton AntiVirus and everytime I turn on my computer, it says my spyware and antivirus is on. When I open the Security center, it says m virus protection, firewall, etc is all secure. Just in case, I have run several full system scans, and everything is clean, so it doesn't seem like the antivirus is off. Also, my Windows says that I don't have antivirus installed.

So I have a system that I am trying to get online with. I know that Norton's Internet Worm Protection is the problem. I went through many guides to find out how to allow program rules, this is where my problem began.

I am unsure of what version I have. When I double click on Norton in my tool bar it comes up to the protection screen where it shows whats being protected. Up top I click Norton Antivirus and go down to setting. I go to "Virus And Worm Setting" and up comes a screen. I go down the tray to "Internet Worm Protection. When I click it I get a screen that is faded and wont let me click any buttons on the internet worm protection. I need major help because I have been trying to solve it all weekend.

Norton is the worst anti-virus product ever made and I would not install it on my computer if I was paid to do so. Norton is more of a virus than an anti-virus. It's a huge resource hog, notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans. The software will do more harm to your PC than good and when you try to remove it, it leaves behind over 375 traces in your registry files/folders and subsystem. It's so bad they had to create a removal tool which is still not going to fix all the problems.

I used Norton for several years, but in the past couple of years it has started to suck so badly. I would delete it from your computer.

Once you do that Windows will give you a warning that you have no virus protection. It will then show you a list of virus killers you can purchase. But most have a trial period of 60 days right up to one with a one year trial. Get that one and you won't have to think about viruses and spending money for another 12 months.

Ditch Norton though, it really sucks badly. I took it off my brand new Dell at work (last year) and the machine almost doubled in speed and stopped crashing all the time. Norton was actually worse than having a virus!

aside from the cost, the norton suite is a notorious 'kernel' hooker which means that it attaches itself to the very core of windows: and windows does not like this, unless specifically allowed by microsoft; hence the warning about 'digital signing' you see when installing a 3rd party software in xp) (also which is why the 'vista' platform runs so poorly with driver issues: it blocks this behavior) and so, the system slows down.
