Antivirus: AVG vs Spysweeper: compare and contrast?

I have several, you might say many, pieces of malware protection. I will keep them all. Finally, I want to include either AVG (Soho) or SpySweeper (they won't live together - one demands removal of the other!) If anyone out there has experience with *BOTH* I would appreciate hearing a comparison.

Better get your facts straight.

AVG is an Anti-virus program.

Spy Sweeper is and anti-spyware/malware program.

THEY DO DIFFERENT THINGS!!

They DO NOT conflict with one another in any way!

I have the two of them running on my PC all the time. I used to have more programs running but whittled down to AVG and Spy Sweeper and have had no problems since.

I also use a Linksys router with a built in firewall. I use the Microsoft firewall. And I get the security benefits of Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2.0 I have had no problems thus far.

I do have AdAware Pro, Spybot Search %26 Destroy, Registry Mechanic, and a couple of others that I run every week just to make sure nothing is hiding on my PC.

You don't need a multitude of programs to keep you computer clean. AVG and Spy Sweeper do the job very well as your front line defenses and running some of the others to help maintain your PC is always a good practice.

I don't know why you'd even be thinking about getting rid of it. I've had it 4 years with no problems. I got Norton with my last computer purchase and it missed viruses that AVG picked up. I love it, a daily update and scan when YOU want it to. You can uninstall it by going to your Control Panel and then to Add/Delete Programs.

No. For AVG, as long as you are private user, you can use it without any time limit. Just like Zonealarm for firewall and Spy-box for anti-spyware.

AVG is a decent anti-virus (I use it myself) and it does have real-time protection. that being said, it is not the best out there in terms of detection; Kaspersky is, but it's not free.

There are other good free anti-virus programs out there as well, but AVG and Avast are the most popular. As for Kasperaky, if you want the same detection for free and have (or want) an AOL email address, AOL Safety Center uses the Kaspersky engine and signature files.

hi ive got an a security package that does everything basically (all of the stuff in the title and wifi protection and anti phishing) but when i installed it the notification area on windows went diferent. the security icon come up but none of the other icons come up, the icons that are usually there are windows defender etc and theyve dissapeared, about once in 2 weeks do they all come up. so i restored my pc to 2 days earlier and installed it again and it stayed the same. is there anything i should worry about or should i just leave it and carry on as normal?

After extensively researching all anti-virus products I can say the best anti-virus is Kaspersky, though NOD32 is better for computer experts. Kaspersky is the best all-round anti-virus program. NOD32 runs faster and has less software conflicts but as a consequence the user interface is difficult to use.

The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.

It has been proven ESET NOD32 and Kaspersky are better than the best sellers Norton and McAfee (see the consumersearch source for reviews of the top anti-virus products). NOD32 is the "Best anti-virus product of 2006" -Av Compartives.

There must have been a driver configuration mishap during your install, probably just a simple bit error. I recommend uninstall and re-install. I know that it is a hassle, but the program will work fine afterward.

Go start / control panel / click on add or remove programs and remove the software.

For re-install: go start / my computer / c:drive or local disk / program files / find the file program folder and inside click on setup or install file.

Keep only the Kaspersky.

one way is to use a usb memory stick and dnlaod the anti-virus file onto that, then put the stick into the windows usb port and install from the stick.

Make sure you dnload a windows version of the software....I use AVG antivirus and they do have a free version

For spyware, I always run Spybot Search %26 Destroy (be sure to get it from safer-networking.org to get the untampered version) and Adaware SE. Those two nearly always seem to get everything back in order.

For antivirus, definitely NOT Norton Antivirus. That thing takes over your whole computer and chokes your system to nothing.

McAffee, though, has always given me very good real-time protection and cleaning, in my experience.

It's best to uninstall it and reinstall it as sometimes files may get corrupted causing the product to fail. So, reinstalling the program should fix your problem.
What kind of antivirus you have? If you using norton antivirus just uninstall the pogram after that restart your pc and install it again the same with others antivirus software.
certain virus-like programs are designed to disable your antivirus software to make wreaking havoc easier. if your definitions stay up-to-date, this should be avoidable.

Just type avgfree download into your search bar..and you should get the download page. Dont use your laptop without antivirus.

Too much of anything is not a good thing (smile) You can have up to 2 spyware programs loaded on your computer, but only 1antivirus program installing, more than 1 antivirus program they would be conflict with each other and want work right. You should still be very careful. AVG is not perfect, in fact it can only detect about 84% of viruses. You need to be smart about what you download and how you surf the Web.

I strongly recommend using FireFox, it's a far better and safer alternative to Internet Explorer. If you add-on McAfee SiteAdvisor, it will warn you of potentially harmful sites. I also recommend CCleaner which is a free system optimization and privacy tool.

If you are using windows OS then it is better to have an antivirus. Try kaspersky, you won't regret it. Mcafee site advisor is really helpful when you want to know if a certain site is secure. But if you know where you are surfing then it is not needed that much.

Your renewal allows you to get the latest antivirus definitions i.e. you still will receive the same definitions like in 2008, but your engine/version will still be that of this year/last year (2007). Unless otherwise specified by a promotion your are stuck with this crap for another year. Don't bother with Norton antivirus, it's rubbish, slow and takes up loads of space on your hard drive. Go for a free antivirus programme like AVG Free Edition, Avira or Avast. All of these are free downloads and are better than Norton.

FREE antivirus and antispyware that WORKS?

My computer is infect to all hell. Infected like Ashton Kutcher's 30th birthday party! Okay, that lame joke aside, I am not only looking to prevent spyware and viruses...I'm looking to remove a plethora of infections I already have. I have Spybot Search %26 Destroy, Hitman Pro (it was working fine until Spy Doctor asked for payment...), AOL, and probably some other protection that is absolutely not working (or in most cases, requires payments that I cannot make as I am a minor without a job).

Is there anything that you have personally tried and can honestly say is completely free and removed all viruses and spyware from your computer? I've already gotten the Blue Screen of Death more than once (and had to set my computer back to an earlier date!) and I'm not anticipating another case.

Yes you need it running, it can prevent you from getting infected, which it will not do when running, however there is a higher rated FREE antivirus program that uses less resources than AVG check out the video below.

Some anti virus programs will scan the drive automatically, about once a week, or anytime on demand. But, they also monitor the incoming data at all times and will block or warn you about an unsafe Internet site or about any unauthorized attempt to access your computer. They can prevent a problem before it happens because they are always running in the background. Norton and McAfee are two examples. Don't go on the Internet without an anti virus utility.

I prefer Avast or AVG free edition. I use both and find them both excellent. In 4 years since I went with the free version, and got away from MacAfee and Norton I have not had a virus on any of my 13 computers.

I have had Norton and Lavasoft Adaware and Spyware doctor running quite well on my PC. I updated spyware doctor today, and Adaware yesterday, and Norton does not load now during boot up. You could try Avast- it's free...I found it in an article by a national computer magazine- the entire article (not an advertisement) was about the product. It works.... at least for me.

Get rid of Norton, it's rubbish. You have to pay for Norton and it takes up load of space on your hard drive and slows your system down. When I first got my new laptop it came with a 60 day free trial of Norton included but the first thing I did was to uninstall it.

I just got the program installed 5 days ago. On the icon bar, by the time, I noticed it had an exclamation infront of the logo. So, I knew something was up so, I clicked it. Protection Updates and Spyware Definitions needed attention so I clicked the fix button and it scanned. Check for Updates %26 Download Updates completed, but Process Updates failed. It says go to tech support, but I'm having no luck! The error codes were 1825 for both defintion and detection scan. So, any suggestions or help that I could make the failed change to a completed?

Run the scans and leave them on for security.

When you say it was a "major pain to get defender pro off my computer". Does this mean you have removed 100%. Go to the tray, start, run and type in: c://program files, click on browse, and click on program files. Look to see if the name of the file is still there. If so delete. If file says being used by another software reboot and try again.

Go to start, search and type in: Defender Pro, and let your PC search for all related files. Delete from top to bottom. If any refuse to delete, reboot and try again.

Have you tried to perform a system restore??. If not go to start, accessories, system tools and open system restore. Look for a date before you had the problem and if there is a system restore, then restore your PC. This should resolve the problem. Being you will go back to your last good configuration.

I'd get AVG....it's a very fine anti-virus program...very efficient, too, and is not a resource hog...and it's FREE. (Plus, it's always being updated...sometimes three or four times a day.)

And I'd use LavaSoft Ad-Aware in conjunction with it. It's a free spyware program, that will also pick up viruses as well.

If nothing else, download both of these and try them while you're deciding what other software to get.

there is a norton anti virus protection software out there or there is a AVG Technologies software.
AVG is what I use. I used the free version for a year, then bought the full version (nice, because it can scan certain areas instead of the entire computer).

As for antispyware, Windows Defender is a free download from the Microsoft website, and seems to work quite well.

I must say, though, the best medicine is prevention. Use safe internet practices, such as only downloading stuff from trustworthy sites, don't open email attachments from senders you don't know, and never, ever download porn.
You'll hear people say Symantec, it's good just a resource hog. I have always used Zone Alarm. It has outstanding anti virus and spyware protection. It has tons of other features. Check it out.

omg I have never had any kind of software on my pc that slowed me down like mcafee. I have a very fast processor 2 gb ram 250 hard drive and everythign is new and I had more problems than you can count when I installed mcafee. My programs took forever to load and they stopped responding all the time, until I uninstalled it.

Mcafee is pretty decent. But if you want something good and that doesnt take up a lot of resources use NOD32 if you want to get even crazier use zone alarm Internet security suite.

It even alrests you if someone is pinging you. With that I got 3 to 4 pings a day where no other antivirus software warned me about.
Mcafee is a very respected programme, but I had it, after a few months it kept freezing my computer up. Its medium on system resourses. Not sure how it works with vista, its very easy to use, and its very effective firewall antivirus etc. But I wouldnt use it again it was proberly some thing with my computer. But its a very respectable programme.
I'm using McAfee.

It is highly configurable so if you are worrie about resources you can strip it down a bit, such as removal of the splash screen and disabling information alerts. I'd say medium to light. I have zero system slow down.

It's pretty easy to use... and has some nice features like file shredding and troubleshooting tools (ping,etc..)

It provides daily updates, and I never hear reports of users who properly configuring it having problems.

You would need to google reports for stability on x64 vista.

Not only don't use free anti-virus software from the internet, do not renew your over-priced subscription. Keep using what you have and when you can come up with $20-30 bucks go to cheapsoftware.com and buy the new 2007 norton or mcafee security suites for a huge discount, much less than you would pay to renew, you just have to search for good deals and now you know where to look.
What ever you do DON'T download a-squared free. It completly crashed my computer and I had to invest in a new one.

Spysweeper tracks and removes spyware, not viruses. With expired antivirus you will not be able to download any new updates for Norton. So yes, you machine becomes at risk more and more each day.

I have Ad-Aware, Spybot, Windows Defender, and HijackThis. For anti-rootkit, AVG Anti-Rootkit. For antivirus, avast!. Can I download AVG Anti-Spyware or Spyware Doctor. Spyware Doctor is shareware and I don't money to buy the license for the software. If I install one more, does it make my computer slow down or crash or anti-spyware fight with each other like antivirus.

I heard I can Install 4 or 5 anti-spyware software to fight the bad spyware. What the good or best choice?

I think you've got too much. Switch to just Spyware Doctor and Spybot-Search and Destroy. These programs are the best anti-spyware programs out there, in my opinion (and they're free). As for anti-virus, try switching to AVG. AVG is a lot more efficient and more user-friendly.

You can install it anytime. If you install it after McAfee expires you will be unprotected during that window of time. Installing it before it expires is probably a good thing to do. If your McAfee includes a firewall feature you will want to make it allow the Norton software when it prompts you.

You have to delete\uninstall McAfee 1st. After that install Norton. Do it anytime you want, there are no restrictions by McAfee on this process. Then, just as long as you have an antivirus installed your OK.
You can install the anti-virus anytime. One PC can have more than one anti-virus. I have three anti-virus protecting my PC.

You can try other affordable anti-virus such as AVG or Antivir. Don't only install an anti-virus, also install anti-spyware, anti-adware and etc.

I agree that norton products have been bloated in the past but since 2007 they have improved a lot.

NIS2007/NIS2008 are great they scan a lot faster and use very little resources.

The detection is great and it detects almost everything.

I used to use nod32 but switched to nis2007 and i have stuck to it.

The firewall component in norton is far superior to that is eset smart security.

My final recommendation stick to norton .

Kaspersky is the best antivirus program out there now for home users, but it does need to be renewed yearly. It all depends if you need better protection than the free AV's have to offer. If you use the internet occasionally you can get by with free anti-virus software. I personally use the internet a lot and I need better protection, I use NOD32 which has over 99% detection rate. Hi.

Try booting your PC into SAFE MODE. This is usually done by pressing F8 when your PC is booting.

Once in safe mode, do a full system scan using CA AntiVirus, if it is still working (it should be, unless the virus has completely corrupted it).

If the CA AntiVirus still does not work in safe mode, then try completely reinstalling it.

If, after all the above, CA is still messed up, then try to do a system restore and restore your PC to earlier date.

you bought a 1 year subscription. You don't have to buy the program itself again, you just need to renew the subscritpion so you get the updates. Without the updates the program is useless.

There are a bunch of free virus protections programs out there that work just as well. Avast is one of the better ones at www.avast.com. Just avoid AVG. Its one of the worst rated.

MS Protection suit is not bad, I am not a fan of defender because it's a little too out of control with security but the firewall and any good virus scanner I think is all you really need.

Verify that Trend Micro Antivirus is a full version and not just a trial. It's an OK Antivirus software, I prefer Norton but it's fine.

Zone Alarm Pro, again, verify that it's a full version and not just a trial. Their free version is a great product and some of the features in the Pro are nice.

Spy Sweeper and Windows Defender have people who like them. Me personally I don't care for them.

My advice (take with a grain of salt) it to not use Internet Explorer, instead, switch to Firefox (free) and when you do go into the Privicy Settings and check all the boxes under clear private data on exit (includes cache, history, cookies, etc.). This way you will be protected. Also, get a free copy of Ad Adware by Lavasoft to keep your computer free from spyware and add ware.
