Every question I post or read about Kaspersky or Bitdefender I see tons of answers SWEARING that their free protection is just as secure. Is this a fact ( %26 I'm NOT saying this as an insult) or are people praising it cause its cheap? Don't get me wrong cheap/free stuff is awesome... but I just want to know what my options are. I am leaning towards Kaspersky, but I don't know if I am wasting $$$
Free Antivirus %26 spyware VS $ Retail $?antivirus protection
I have found that freeware security and utility applications, when chosen after careful research and used in tested combinations, can provide protection matching or exceeding that provided by commercial suites. The problem with most of the suites isn't the antivirus protection, it's that their firewalls range from middling to lousy. The two best overall suites with good firewalls are the ZoneAlarm suite and Kaspersky suite, (see http://www.matousec.com for results of firewall leaktesting), but there are freeware firewalls that match or exceed their protection. Meanwhile, there are several good antivirus applications that are certified by VB100 and/or ICSA that provide protection at the same level as the commercial programs.
If you need freeware security applications, you can choose from the following:
