i turned on my computer today and the anti-virus protection was off, i turned it back on and it shut itsself off again, i tried to update it and it just sits there saying connecting, i can use the web obviously so anyone have any ideas?

What kind of antivirus you have? If you using norton antivirus just uninstall the pogram after that restart your pc and install it again the same with others antivirus software.
