I don't want realtime protection of any sort. I just wnt the program to start when I run it, and not remain in memory or have any processes when I am doing other things.

I'd recommend AVG and eSet antivirus programs. They are both quite lightweight and won't bog your system down, unlike Norton and Mcafee. You should be able to turn off real-time protection on ANY virus product, though.
Grisoft's AVG is the best I have found and it is not b;loated like Norton and McAfee
there is also avastfree home edition-only way i know to stop it is is turn it off or set settings to only install at your request-dont know of any program that will not go to memory ?
