I use AVG. If you know you have a virus you should turn off system restore, restart your computer in safe mode (windows xp) and then scan and don't forget to update your anti-virus definitions. An online scanner you can use is http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

If you are willing to spend a few bucks, then I would recommend Kaspersky. But if you want a free anti-virus, then AVG is certainly the best. No anti-virus is perfect, so there is much possibility that even Kaspersky may not detect a worm or virus, but usually AVG DOES detect the common viruses and worms(almost 90% detection); but if you have got some extra-ordinary virus-producers for enemies, then I am sorry! :-(
