Malware protection on windows vista?

I have a dell computer 45 days old, when i turn it on the systems notifies me that my virus protection is not enabled. The security center open in my windows vista and show the button for antivirus is turned off. When I click it to turn it on, nothing happens. When I try to open TrendMicro, a message states that an earlier version is already running. Any suggestions on how to turn my virus protection on

I have Vista but i did'nt want their malware protection so i tured mine off to and kept getting those messages so i just selected ignore now the message went away. thank GOD.

We have better free programs to choose from andi perfer AVG on all of my computers.
